Marshall Terrace Park holds a secret. Each spring, hundreds of herons, double-crested cormorants and egrets alight upon the two small islands just off the bank of the Mississippi next to the park. Here they vie for space among the spindly branches to build large nests, often noisily and with much drama. Despite the limited space and chaotic conditions, the birds make the best of it and settle in to raise their chicks. It is a spectacle unlike any you have seen elsewhere, and is well worth the visit.
